A Lesson From A Lawyer

Have you ever needed advice from a lawyer? I would bet that everyone needs a lawyer at some point in their lives. There really are quite a few things that come up that are best handled by a lawyer. We all know that we should have a will, but sometimes things happen that are beyond our control and then you find yourself in a situation where you need legal advice.

Earlier this year I was in a parking garage and slipped and fell on some ice. Unlike most people I don’t have health insurance. I did go to my regular doctor and he thought that it would heal ok. On my follow up visit he noticed that the bones had moved and he said that I would need surgery and pins. We knew that would be a big expense and  we decided to see what our options were. The parking garage had not used any ice melt, so we felt it was an unsafe situation. We contacted a lawyer and he gave us a mini course in what constitutes an unsafe situation. I had always heard that if someone fell on your property they could sue you. But I learned that it has to be something very unsafe like obstacles left out in the way or cords and things left on stairs or a  sidewalk. While I was relieved to know that I as a home owner can’t be sued over someone just falling on my clear sidewalk, I also found out that the parking garage was not responsible for my fall. We paid for all my medical expenses and chalked it up to a learning experience.

Sometimes things aren’t as cut and dry as my experience with legal matters. Finding the right lawyer for your needs is very important.

This is a sponsored post from lawyer New Orleans or Kirkpatrick and Associates - although the opinions and thoughts are my own.
