This recipe is from my favorite Betty Crocker Cookbook. I've always wanted to make them and finally got around to trying them. They were fun to make, and I love the touch of nutmeg in them. The kids loved them!
Buttons and Bowknots
2 cups flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 cup milk
1 egg
1/4 cup butter
3/4 cup sugar
Heat oven to 400 degrees.
Whisk the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add the egg and milk and mix just until it comes together. Knead 5 times on a floured surface. Pat out to 1/2 inch thick. Cut with a donut cutter. To make Bowknots, hold opposite sides of each ring with finger and twist to form figure "8." Place "holes" (buttons) and Bowknots on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes. Immediately after baking, dip each Button and Bowknot into melted butter, then role in sugar.
