Checkered Dress Redo~What should we do?

Sloan and I found this dress at a garage sale a while back and I thought it had potential!

So, I shortened it, shortened the sleeves, took off the pocket and changed the buttons. Sloan thinks there is to much black and white going on. Now she wants me to make a skirt out of it. She wants to know what my blog friends think? Can we make this work for a cute school outfit?

Love it! It could use a splash of red, I think. That would reduce the black & white. Maybe a red belt & red shoes!

I like the idea of adding red, but my issue is with the sleeves. They look a little matronly. Could you make some little fluttery cap sleeves instead? And get the girl to smile, of course ;)

I think it looks super cute the way you altered it, especially with the leggings! It's something that could transition well from summer to fall. I agree with some of the other comments, maybe a bright colored belt or even yellow or red shoes would make the outfit not so black and white.

You did a great job! I like it! You could shorten the sleeves - more cap like! Great job!

Although it's cute...I vote for making it into a skirt...or at the very least, a tank style dress. :)

Carol~

First, lemme say I think you did a great job! I like it how it is.

Still, I can see your point about the sleeves (refashioning sleeves always gives me fits!)...perhaps cuff them, or as you suggested, make them cap sleeves.

I agree with the others about a colorful belt, but it doesn't have to be red...remember how I added green and pink accessories to the black and white polka dot dress? Electric blue would look nice as well.

I like the dress as a dress, but if your daughter will be more likely to wear it as a skirt, then you should do that...maybe you could salvage the shirt too? And for what it's worth, my daughter hates everything I sew for her (and she's only 10!)

One more idea--is she into the denim vest trend? If so, I think that would look lovely with this dress And cute old denim vests are all over every thrift store! I personally like the lighter wash and close fit...just a thought.

I would also go with girly sleeves. Like the really tiny ruffly sleeves? It would give the whole thing a completely new look already. And maybe take off the collar, make it a little more modern? You can also use ribbon or fabric scraps to add colour to the edges by hemming them on. I'm sure whatever you do it will look great :)

Thanks for this post about the checkered dress you recently found at a garage sale. I think your idea to shortened it was a great one.
